Look for me on the air this weekend, as I activate Lyndon B. Johnson National & State Parks located smack dab in the middle of Central Texas. Lyndon B. Johnson National Park was actually the first (and only) park I tried to activate for NPOTA last year which was a disastrous fail. So i’m heading out to reconquer that park! I tried activating the park with QRP… and with a mag loop, on a day that band conditions were just horrendous!
I’ve got to get some on-air time in..
its been too long. At this point its in my blood. No turning back now. I’ll just have to get my outdoor ham radio fix more often now that its finally cooling off here in Texas!
This time… armed with 100 watts – digi modes – & SSB. I plan on operating the new mode FT-8 by sending a free-text message after the QSO is complete with my park information. Even though it’s not required for the park exchange, it’s still nice to identify occasionally as someone who is portable & activating a park! (Usually nets more responses). I’ll operate 20/30/40m, and will plan to self spot there on Twitter, in the POTA facebook group & in the http://wwff.co/dx-cluster/.
Lyndon B. Johnson State Park (will be my first stop): KFF-3035
Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park: KFF-0743
ETA is 1700-2200UTC. I’m hoping it’s not overly crowded – usually isn’t the most popular park around, so I shouldn’t have problems to string out my band hopper antenna behind the truck. I’m planning on using tripods from this point forward to support the ends of the dipole (when I can). I usually get a funny look from park personnel anytime I try to put a stake or pole or anything of the sort in the ground – so i’d rather not take that chance anymore.
Can’t wait for this one….
