This had to be the toughest activation yet as far as noise & propagation goes. Thunderstorms were rolling all across Texas today, heck over the entire U.S. it seemed like! I guess you can’t win them all… Well, with 29 in the log, I really shouldn’t be complaining. I operated for 2 hours today from the RGV NWR, directly from South Padre Island, just on the edges of the borders of the park area.
As usual, it was blistering hot today, so chose to do the activation from the truck. Trees & shade are hard to come by when you get this close to the coast! The upside to doing it in the truck, is I can setup really fast, and in such weather, I can usually operate longer, because most of my equipment is already setup. I just deployed the SOTABeams Band Hopper antenna on the Spiderpole mast again off the back of the truck.
A big thank you once again to everyone who attempted to work me, I know there were lots of folks that I tried to work, but was unable to due to the band fading in & out so fast today. I don’t think i’ve ever experienced the bands changing that fast as I did today. One moment, a signal would be 59, the next I couldn’t hear anything.
My good friend W5MIX, Matt, of Dripping Springs, Texas was able to record my QSO with W5EME, (who is also from Dripping Springs, TX) on his Flex Radio! Check it out on Soundcloud… (thanks Matt!)
As you can tell, there were lots of static crashes, and propagation was all over the place! I usually frequent South Padre Island quite a bit, and there at least 5 or 6 other parks that are easily accessible from where I stay, so hopefully i’ll be able to snatch a few more! Me & the wife have made it a point to start travelling more, so this will be a perfect opportunity for me to explore some parks & get my ham radio fix on!
I was also able to ping N5RGV’s repeater here on South Padre Island and make a QSO with WB5B. I’m making it a point to explore other repeater systems so that I can possibly meetup with some other folks that might want to do these activations with me! Ham radio is only fun when shared with others…
Again, a TEXAS sized thank you to the following operators! Looking forward to the next…
