Speaking of Winter Field Day… it snowed last night in Austin, TX! I haven’t seen snow in these parts of Texas in a very long time. In 1985, snow completely blanketed Central Texas, and I was only 4 years old, but remember it very well. I absolutely love the Winter, and the bitter cold that comes with it. Cold weather training was one of my absolute favorite field activities in the military. WFD is where the challenge really lies IMHO. ARRL Field Day is held in the summertime, which is as equally as fun. But operating outdoors in the cold is a fantastic training opportunity, and a great time to get together & sit round the fire & share ham radio stories!

The Oak Hill Amateur Radio Club is gathering once again for Winter Field Day at Fred, AB5CA’s residence. Fred is on 20 acres of land down in  Luling, TX. His location was the perfect spot for Winter Field Day – plenty of space & lots of firewood to keep warm! We just held a large clean up party at his residence & cleared quite a bit of brush & trees from our operating area. We’ll have 4 stations this year, as opposed to the 6 we had last year. Our goal is to keep the stations that we do have out there busy round the clock making contacts.

Putting up full size antennas is probably my favorite technical aspect of WFD. It’ll be interesting to see what all the stations deploy. I’m helping organize the event, but luckily this year I won’t have to bring that much gear except for my camera and some cold weather gear! I’ll operate some SSB & Digital at some point throughout the contest which lasts for 24 hours. We had such a great time last year out at Fred’s place, that we decided to hold it there again. A great little spot that’s surrounded by really tall trees (80′ in some places). So as you can imagine, we’ve got a whole bunch of folks going to try slingshots & the like to get their antennas up really high.

Still 2 months away – we plan earlier every year to ensure a fun experience for the whole club. We use Slack (an online messaging platform) to stay connected and discuss options about the entire event. (Slack has been invaluable in keeping in touch with the club and organizing events like this.)

If anyone in the community is interested in attending this event, please message me k5acl@arrl.net & I’ll give you all the details on how to get involved with the club!
