Yesterday was one of those days, a really rough one stress wise. So I grabbed my pack, and went on a quick park activation outing to Lockhart State Park… if you’d ever like to try this park out.. the best spot IMHO is highlighted in the below pic. It’s the highest point in the park on a little hill, with a perfect spot to backup your vehicle and operate from. There are also several picnic tables and some shaded area near a pavilion there, which was completely empty when I went. By far, my favorite park yet, and so little! This was just what I needed…

It’s a fairly small sized park at just over 200 acres, but the landscape is just absolutely lush with trees once you go east of Interstate 35 in Texas. A quick drive upto the hilltop, & I was setup in no time with the new SOTABeams Band Hopper III+ antenna. This is a link dipole with current balun & coax included. This particular one is for 20m/30m/40m. Perfect for a 100 watt radio, and just about as good of an antenna that you can deploy while portable. I think this will be a new favorite! Propagation has been so rough lately I won’t even touch the mag loop even though it’s the easiest antenna I have to setup for portable ops.

I started out on 20m, & made 36 contacts & one to EA1DR at over 5,000 miles (barely audible mind you). Hopped over to 40 once things slowed down, and made only 2 contacts with dedicated hunter & activator – K0ATZ who was able to give me a club call (K0EAR) as well, thanks Brian! After 45 minutes of calling CQ without much luck, I hopped back to 20 & made another 11 contacts to call it a day at 49 SSB qso’s using 100 watts & a wire 😉

Big thank you to everyone who worked me, there were several stations that I couldn’t pull out of the noise yesterday, lots of static crashes but thanks for trying anyways! A good dose of radio was just what I needed, too bad I didn’t have time to stop for BBQ in Lockhart!
