Support your Parks on the Air Activators this January 20-21, 2018. Operators from all over the country will be headed out to State & National Parks, Wildlife Refuges, and many other protected outdoor areas to setup camp and operate ham radio for the ‘Parks on the Air – Winter Event’. Anyone can participate in the event & submit logs to the POTA crew so that your hunters (folks that worked you) will get credit for the contact. It’s really an exciting search and pounce event for hunters, as well as the outdoor aspect for the activators! This is a great program, and the folks behind it are just the nicest you’ll ever meet on the air. I enjoy spreading the word about the Parks on the Air program. I wish I had gotten involved in the National Parks on the Air program spearheaded by ARRL, but one can only hope that they’ll bring a program like that back sooner than later!
On January 21, 2018, I’ll be heading to Government Canyon State Natural Area just south of Austin, TX. GCSNA is very close to where I grew up – Medina Lake (Mico, TX) & not too far from the high school I went to (Medina Valley H.S.)! I’m headed to work some contacts with Jerry, W5MIG. I used to frequent GCSNA growing up, as it was one of the only park areas close by. It’s a 12,000 acre plot of land that has a slight bit of elevation that overlooks the entire city of San Antonio. I’m hoping to be able to ruck the 100w radio a small distance if the weather is fairing well. Since I’ll be operating with another op who is also using 100w, I’ll have to put some distance in between myself & Jerry to prevent us affecting each others transceivers.
This should make for a fun event & allow the opportunity for plenty of ‘Park to Park’ contacts, which are like DX for a POTA operator 😉 Always exciting to hear another POTA operator come across the air who is also in the great outdoors! But it’s as equally humbling at the hundreds of folks who work me (or at least attempt to!) during these activations.
Spread the word about the POTA Winter Event! Better yet, get out and operate it! I have more success (& fun!) with my POTA/SOTA activations than any other kind of operating! If you need more information about the program, feel free to comment, shoot me an email, checkout the POTA website, or join the POTA Facebook page.
